How to Enrol
In 2024 the Department of Education introduced a new more streamlined model for Prep applications, led by a digital enrolments system called VicStudents. The following steps outline the process by which enrolments are formalised. Specific dates by which the following steps need to be completed will be determined by the Department in the coming months and shared as part of our 2025 prep enrolment process.
Step 1
Access the VicStudents enrolments system online.
Click here to visit the VicStudents enrolment portal and register before completing your child’s application. Applications for Prep 2026 can only be accepted after Tuesday 22 April. For detailed instructions on how to use the VicStudents application portal see the Digital Enrolment Parent Carer Guide.
Step 2
Applicants will be requested to provide further documentation
As part of your application, VicStudents will request that you provide copies of the following documentation:
- Birth Certificate (English translated)
- Immunisation Form from the Australian Immunisation Register
- Proof of Residence (Tenancy Agreement, Contract of Sale, Builders Contract or Council Rates Notice) See Enrolment 100 Point Address Checklist for a list of accepted proof of residence.
- Medical Management Plans (Asthma and Anaphylaxis)
- Documentation for any Wellbeing alerts (Intervention Orders and additional learning support needs)
- Visa information*
*All copies of student visas must be provided to the School as part of the enrolment process. The student’s eligibility for enrolment is based on the visa of the student and then in the second instance the family or parent. Depending on the status and visa number, students may need to apply through the Victorian Schools International Division https://www.study.vic.gov.au/en/Pages/default.aspx
Please note: Applications will not be reviewed until all of the above documents are provided.
Step 4
Applications are reviewed and outcomes are updated on VicStudents.
The school will review all applications and will either offer a place of enrolment or decline. Schools will update the status of your application online via VicStudents between Monday 28 July – Friday 8 August.
Declined applications can request an appeal. Click here for further information on the Appeals Process.
Step 5
Accepted applicants complete a full application form
Parents/Carers of accepted applicants will be prompted to complete a full application form via the portal. Once complete, Administration can finalise your enrolment into Prep 2026.

School Enrolment Restriction
Our school has an enrolment restriction under section 2.2.16 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic). The restriction limits Prep/Foundation enrolments for the 2026 school year.
Our school will accept enrolments from:
- students who live within the school zone
- students with a sibling attending the school at the same time
- students enrolling on compassionate grounds, in exceptional circumstances.
Depending on available places, our school may be able to accept a limited number of out-of-zone enrolments according to next closest to the school.
The department will review this enrolment restriction yearly and provide updated advice as necessary for the subsequent school year.
Transition
Kurrun Primary School conducts a number of transition activities to support students transitioning into the school. Transition activities include:

- Student Transition Sessions
- Kinder Visits
- Transition Learning Development Statements
- School-wide student induction program titled ‘Taking Off!’
Preparing Your Child For School
School readiness begins at home with some very simple but effective activities you can complete with your child to build their confidence around starting school.
The Victorian Government Starting School website offers a bounty of useful information on the Foundation (Prep) enrolment process.
Parenting Website, Raising Children, also has a wonderful section on preparing children for primary school, offering advice on how to set them up in both a practical and emotional sense.
Our Top Tips For School Readiness
- Attend a school tour with your child so that they can become familiar with the environment. Our Prep orientation sessions are another great opportunity for them to explore the school grounds and experience a Prep classroom before they arrive.
- Try to build connections with other children attending from the same kinder or Prep orientation sessions before the first day of school. It really can help if your child knows another child going to the same school before school starts.
- Start talking about their daily school routine and how it will change – for example, what time they’ll have to get up in the morning, how they’ll get to and from school, and what they’ll have in their lunch box.
- Organise your child’s uniform over the summer break, giving them a chance to try it on, check it fits comfortably, wear-in their shoes and get excited about wearing it at school. There can be a lot of pride for children around wearing a uniform and it’s a great way to make them feel like part of a new community.
- Read a children’s book about starting school with your child. Reading books about school can help you talk with your child about their feelings and what to expect. We are so lucky to have some amazing local libraries and their teams can help you source their most popular school-readiness reads!
